GEEL held a 3-day training in Energy Project Feasibility and Planning for the electricity industry representatives. The training, organized in collaboration with Somaliland Electricity Association, gathered 30 participants from the majority of Somaliland ESPs (including 4 CEOs and several chief engineers), Ministry of Energy and Minerals, industries and business firms The training course focused on evaluating costs, production, and technical and financial viability of diesel generation, photovoltaic, CSP, hybrid and wind projects.

The course was based on the RETScreen, an internationally renowned software tool for economic and technical evaluation of energy projects feasibility. The course participants had a chance to practice the acquired knowledge by working in the groups on 5 case studies developed by GEEL Energy Team specifically for this training.

An evaluation conducted at the end of the course identified a number of areas that were challenging for the audience, such as wind energy, financial analysis, and GHG emissions.

These and other topics will require additional follow-on training, which GEEL can conduct through cost-effective mechanisms such as webinars. The participants expressed their satisfaction with the training, and some of them discussed their project ideas with GEEL’s training expert. One of the participants submitted a joint project application with the Ambassador Hotel to displace the electrical water heaters with the solar ones.
